Drew Sarka : About The Artist
Earning a medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine may not be the most obvious path to the pursuit of painting, however for me it seemed to be enough impetus to begin oil painting. Perhaps I was trying to escape from the tedium of endless hours of memorizing facts- this type of learning doesn’t do much to satisfy a creative personality. My interest in art began as a child. I was fortunate to live close to NewYork City and its abundance of museums and galleries. Most people may recall the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty as the highlight of their trip to NYC, but for me it was The Frick Collection or the Guggenheim or Museum of Modern Art... and not to mention the endless number of almost nameless galleries throughout SOHO and south Manhattan. I have been seriously painting for the last seven years, primarily under the guidance of Betty Kirin. Over the last four years, classes with Mark Daily have really expanded my understanding of color and value. I have been fortunate to be exposed to other well known Denver artists at the Art Student’s League of Denver such as Kevin Weckbach, Kim English and Ron Hicks. In May 2008 I just completed an intensive one year class, The Master Painting Class, with Kevin Weckback. Kevin is an incredible teacher and the curriculum is based on the principles that he had learned as a dedicated student of Quang Ho. Though I paint representational subjects my intent is to convey a more broad abstract concept in each of my paintings. Recently I am particularly interested in the effects of light and shadow. There is beauty all around us; I hope to capture just some of this in my paintings. Below you will find a listing of various Art Shows I have been affiliated with.
